WMD Operations
A WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) Operations course (often referred to as PER-212) is a mid-level certification designed for responders who take defensive actions to protect people, property, and the environment from a CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, or Explosive) release.
While the "Awareness" level focuses on recognition and notification, the "Operations" level trains personnel to stabilize a scene from a safe distance and perform basic mitigation tasks.
1. Course Overview
This course transitions from passive observation to active, defensive mitigation.
• Duration: Typically 16 to 24 hours (2–3 days).
• Prerequisite: WMD Awareness (AWR-160) and often ICS-100/700.
• Focus: Defensive tactics, PPE utilization, and decontamination.
2. Key Learning Objectives
At the Operations level, participants move beyond "call for help" and learn to:
• Analyze the Incident: Determine the complexity and potential outcomes of a CBRNE release.
• Plan the Response: Identify defensive strategies and the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Implement Defensive Actions: Execute product control techniques (e.g., damming, diking, and diverting) to contain the spread.
• Perform Decontamination: Set up and operate emergency and mass decontamination corridors.
• Incident Command: Operate within a formal Incident Command System (ICS) structure.
