                           WMD Awareness

A WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) Awareness course (often designated as AWR-160) is an introductory program designed to prepare first responders and public officials to recognize and react to incidents involving chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive (CBRNE) hazards.

1. Course Overview
The primary goal is to provide a "basic awareness" level of training. Participants learn how to identify potential WMD threats, protect themselves, and initiate a response sequence without becoming victims themselves.
• Duration: Usually 4 to 8 hours.
• Format: Available as instructor-led classroom training or web-based self-paced modules (e.g., through FEMA/TEEX).
• Certification: Provides "Awareness Level" certification for hazardous materials/WMD response.
2. Key Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, participants are expected to be able to:
• Recognize the presence of WMD or criminal/terrorist activity at a scene.
• Identify specific hazard classes using the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG).
• Isolate the area and deny entry to unprotected individuals.
• Notify the appropriate authorities and specialized response teams (e.g., Hazmat or Bomb Squad).
• Protect themselves by understanding time, distance, and shielding.
